2021 Marine Debris Program Accomplishments Report

The NOAA Marine Debris Program works every day to find creative solutions to reduce the prevalence and impacts of marine debris. Despite continued obstacles during this difficult period, the NOAA Marine Debris Program and partners adapted and expanded our efforts to achieve the ambitious goals set in our new strategic plan. A snapshot of some of our accomplishments across the country include supporting the removal of over 100,000 pounds of derelict fishing gear from the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument; launching a new protocol, database, and toolkit for the Marine Debris Monitoring and Assessment Project; and sharing the challenges of addressing abandoned and derelict vessels through a webinar series.

Here’s a look at a few highlights and some major accomplishments from our program and our partners this past fiscal year.
