Aquaculture and Marine Protected Areas: Exploring Potential Opportunities and Synergies

It is widely acknowledged that aquaculture has made a significant contribution to the long-term development of coastal communities. Aquaculture has been an essential factor in these regions as it ensures food security, poverty alleviation, and economic resilience. However, there is an urgent need to reconcile nature conservation and sustainable development.

The Aquaculture and Marine Protected Areas publication aims to investigate potential opportunities and synergies between aquaculture and conservation.

The publication emphasizes that both aquaculture and MPA can benefit from one another to pursue global sustainable development. In addition, the publication addresses the following issues:

  • Under what conditions can MPAs and aquaculture coexist?

  • How can MPAs help aquaculture grow?

  • How could aquaculture activities help MPAs financially?

  • And how can we keep negative interactions to a minimum?
