Biodegradability of Plastics in the Open Environment

The European Commission's Scientific Advice Mechanism published a report in December 2020 assessing the environmental benefits of biodegradable plastic applications. The report concluded that biodegradable plastic can potentially provide environmental benefits, but only under certain conditions. 

To achieve these benefits, it suggested limiting the use of biodegradable plastics in the open environment and encouraging the development of certification standards to ensure their appropriate use. It also recommended providing accurate information about the properties, applications, and limitations of biodegradable plastics to relevant user groups.
