Bridging the gap between the science of cultured meat and public perceptions
Meat consumption has a negative impact on the environment, which necessitates immediate action. As a result, cultured meat, which is emerging due to various scientific technologies, has the exciting potential to alleviate the burden of livestock agriculture. Besides, this meat variant offers an alternative method of producing meat sustainably without requiring individuals to become vegetarians. However, consumer acceptance of cultured meat may be hampered by certain negative public perceptions.
This review explains how the academic sector can play a critical role in understanding and communicating the science of cultured meat to the general public. Further, it explains how collaboration between the science and technology of cultured meat and the behavioral sciences will be critical in overcoming public perception challenges and, ultimately, realizing the environmental benefits of cultured meat.
This review also focuses on the anticipated environmental benefits of cultured meat, identifying barriers to the widespread consumption of the variant, and offering potential solutions to overcome those barriers.
