Chitosan-based biodegradable functional films for food packaging applications
Chitin, a prevalent biopolymer found in crustaceans, insects, and fungi, can be converted into chitosan, a versatile biopolymer with amino groups that contribute to its diverse properties. Recent research has focused on utilizing chitosan as a biodegradable antimicrobial food packaging material, exploring various strategies to improve its properties and compete with conventional non-biodegradable plastic-based packaging.
Despite its industrial potential, more research is needed to fully implement chitosan for food packaging applications, taking advantage of its cost-effectiveness and suitability for various industries. This review article consolidates the latest developments of chitosan as a promising food packaging material and its practical applications in this context.
