Coral Reef Economy
According to this study, policies focused on protecting and restoring global coral reefs could lead to substantial economic benefits and contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It underscores that a healthy reef scenario could unlock tens of billions of dollars in extra value compared to a degraded, business-as-usual approach.
This research entails a scenario analysis projecting current and future economic returns from coral reefs and an intervention analysis evaluating different policies for maintaining healthy reefs, including their potential economic benefits and ROI. Although the study models simplify the complex interaction between coral reefs and the economy and do not reflect their total value, the findings can influence future advocacy efforts and encourage greater private sector involvement.
