Drowning in Plastics

The updated "Vital Graphics" publication offers comprehensive insights into the global marine litter and plastic pollution crisis. It explores everything from plastic production and consumption to its impact on ecosystems, human health, and the economy. The report, a collaboration between UNEP, the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm Conventions, and GRID-Arendal builds on the 2016 edition. It introduces new topics, including advanced management solutions for problematic plastics and enhanced plastic waste management. It also addresses the need for policy and governance frameworks at all levels. The document reflects the latest knowledge and offers evidence-based strategies for mitigating known and potential impacts of marine litter while global research continues. This work complements UNEP's new scientific assessment, "From Pollution to Solution," assisting in visually communicating findings and advocating for a transformative shift from traditional practices.
