Feed Back Farm - using insects for adding value to organic waste

Currently, during food production, many organic residues are released into the environment. Insects can convert these residues into nutrients that can be used to feed animals and plants. Thus the cultivation of insects can help create a closed agricultural production cycle.

EIP-AGRI Operational Group converted an idle building into a research facility to understand the “valorization of organic residues from land-based agriculture with the use of insects.”  The larvae of Black Soldier Flies (BSF) were used as intermediaries to convert low-value nutrients from organic residues into high-value proteins and fat. These proteins and fats can serve as food for fish farming and, eventually, for chickens and pigs. The fish excretions can be used to fertilize the vegetable that is grown.
