Guidance on the application of single-use plastic rules

The European Union's Directive (EU) 2019/904 concerning single-use plastics was officially adopted in June 2019. Its primary objective is to prevent and minimize the environmental impact caused by specific plastic products, particularly those affecting aquatic ecosystems and human health. Additionally, the directive aims to foster the transition towards a circular economy, promoting the adoption of innovative and sustainable business models, products, and materials. Member states are required to incorporate the Directive into their national laws and enforce its provisions starting from 3rd July 2021.

Today, new Guidelines have been introduced to facilitate the consistent and proper implementation of the key aspects of the Directive, with a particular focus on defining "plastic," "single-use plastic products" (either fully or partially composed of plastic), and the various items encompassed by the Directive.

Through this legislation, the EU positions itself as a leader in the global battle against marine litter. The Directive plays a crucial role in the Commission's Plastics Strategy and Circular Economy Action Plan, encouraging the adoption of sustainable alternatives to prevent marine litter. Furthermore, it aligns with the Zero Pollution Action Plan and reflects the concerns of European citizens regarding increased sustainability.
