Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has released guides to provide clarity on environmental marketing claims, ensuring marketers avoid unfair or deceptive practices under the FTC Act. The guidelines offer valuable insights, such as allowing unqualified claims of recycled content for products or packages made entirely from recycled material, excluding minor components.
However, for items with partial recycled content, marketers should clearly and prominently qualify the claim to prevent misrepresentation of the amount or percentage of recycled content by weight in the finished product or package. These guides serve as a resource to help marketers navigate the legal and ethical aspects of environmental claims, promoting transparency and preventing misleading practices.
