Net Zero Aluminium Industry Tracker

This report highlights the critical role of aluminium in various industries and its significance for achieving net-zero emissions in the renewable energy sector. However, its production is highly energy-intensive and emits substantial greenhouse gases.

The report suggests that the challenge for primary aluminium lies in decarbonizing energy for refining and smelting while preventing CO₂ release during the smelting process. To address this, a decarbonization pathway is proposed, combining electrification with low-carbon power and hydrogen use for high heat. Investments of at least $510 billion in low-emission power generation, hydrogen production, and carbon transport and storage are needed. Low-emission aluminium is expected to enter the market by 2030 with a green premium of up to 40%. Policies like carbon pricing and carbon border adjustment mechanisms are recommended to create a viable market for low-emission aluminium.

The report emphasizes five priorities for the aluminum sector, including expanding aluminium recycling networks, boosting low-emission projects, developing low-emission power capacity, increasing demand signals for green aluminium, and implementing supportive policies.
