Safeguarding Coral Reefs: Floating Treatment Wetlands to Filter Stormwater
The "Reefs at Risk Revisited" project by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and its partners present an updated, comprehensive assessment of the threats to global coral reefs, including those from human activities and, for the first time, climate-related dangers. Every day, 90 million tonnes of carbon pollution enter the atmosphere, with about a third of it ending up in the oceans, leading to ocean acidification that impacts coral reefs.
The study outlines the location and severity of threats and evaluates the vulnerability of nations and territories to coral reef degradation based on their dependence on reefs and adaptability. The report is an urgent call to policymakers and citizens worldwide to recognize and address the escalating pressures coral reefs face.
