The Science of BIOEFFECT
BIOEFFECT was founded by three Icelandic scientists when they discovered a way to produce plant-based Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) in barley plants after over a decade of research.
EGF is a signaling protein in our skin. It plays a vital role in the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid to maintain the skin's healthy, dense, and youthful appearance. Once people reach maturity, in the twenties, the natural production of growth factor proteins decreases. As a result, cell turnover and repair slow, eventually affecting the appearance - skin starts to sag, and fine lines and wrinkles appear. To combat these visible signs of ageing, BIOEFFECT scientists invented a way to produce the world’s first plant-based EGF protein in barley, their Barley EGF, using cutting-edge biotechnology.
BIOEFFECT Barley is sustainable, uniquely pure, and grown in inert volcanic pumice, using geothermal energy and pure Icelandic water enriched with nutrients. The company's hydroponic, ecologically-engineered greenhouse can nurture up to 130,000 barley plants and is located in the lava fields of Reykjanes Peninsula.
