The sustainability of reusable packaging – Current situation and trends
Packaging is a crucial component in the safe distribution of products within modern society and supply chains. It accounts for approximately 40% of plastics and 50% of paper consumption in Europe, making it a significant consumer of materials. The environmental impact of packaging is substantial, and it also represents a notable cost within the existing supply system. To address these concerns, reusable packaging has emerged as a potential solution to significantly reduce environmental impacts. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the current trends in reusable packaging and synthesizes existing literature to offer insights into the latest knowledge and identify avenues for further research and development. By delving into the key factors influencing the design and impact of more sustainable packaging systems, this review aims to enhance understanding and foster the advancement of sustainable packaging practices.
