The Value of Compostable Packaging
In 2016, a study conducted by the SPC staff focused on waste characterizations at various venues, including a farmers market, an evening concert, a national grocery store, a quick service restaurant, and a full-day festival. The purpose was to analyze the quantities of food waste and compostable packaging in both front-of-house and back-of-house settings at each location.
The collected data provided valuable insights into the relationship between compostable packaging and the amount of food waste it can divert to compostables bins in different settings. This information can be used by compost manufacturers and venues to make informed decisions that contribute to waste diversion and emission reduction efforts.
Understanding the impact of compostable packaging on waste management practices is crucial for sustainable waste management strategies. By utilizing the findings from this study, stakeholders can implement targeted measures to minimize waste generation, promote composting, and mitigate environmental impact.
