Urban Farmers Aquaponic Systems
On the roof of the new REWE GREEN FARMING supermarket in Wiesbaden-Erbenheim, urban farmers have set up an aquaponics farm. The aquaponics farm combines fish farming with herb cultivation. The fish farm provides nutrient-rich water that acts as a biological and environmentally friendly fertilizer for the plants. The process saves up to 90% water. The urban production in the roof farm shortens the transport routes, reducing carbon emissions and providing fresh herbs to the region. The Urban Farmers have even replaced their plastic sleeve with a bag made from recycled paper.
