WWF Position: Plastic Crediting and Plastic Neutrality

In order to achieve the goal of No Plastic in Nature by 2030, a combination of strategies including reducing single-use plastic, improving end-of-life management, and implementing extended producer responsibility must be pursued by the private sector, governments, and consumers. While cautious about plastic crediting due to the lack of clear standards and potential for greenwashing, WWF acknowledges its potential to drive investment towards circular systems if developed appropriately. WWF emphasizes the need for credible plastic crediting systems that contribute to transformational change, with defined prerequisites, transparent reporting of plastic footprints, and strong social and environmental safeguards, while discouraging the use of terms like "plastic neutral" that do not accurately convey environmental impact.
